Sark On: Straight Pride

I heard something recently that puzzled me.

Straight Pride.

Hmm, ok. What the hell was that? So I looked it up.

Apparently, some straight white people are getting all sad and left out. Blacks have Black History Month. Asians have Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. Hispanics and Latinos have National Hispanic-Latino Heritage Month. Indigenous people have National American Indian Heritage Month. You know who didn’t have a month to celebrate their awesomeness and powers of oppression over other races? Straight white people!

Oops, wait, sorry. It’s just Straight people who didn’t have a month or parade of their own. Poor souls.

But, FINALLY, Straight white people… I mean, Straight people, are getting their own pride parade, just like the LGBTQ community!

In Boston, on August 11th, a group calling itself Super Happy Fun America will get their Straight White Pride… damnit! I mean their Straight Pride Parade. The Grand Marshall of the parade will be alt-right douche-bag Milo Yiannopoulos… who is gay. I suspect they tried to get someone who was… ya know… not a douche… and straight. But they settled on this guy, who I guess needs some cash, being $4 million in debt and having to deal with old comments that resurfaced in which he defended pedophilia.

Yeah! Straight Pride!

If you can’t tell by now, I think this is all a fuckin’ joke. It reminds me of all the times I’ve heard straight white males talking about how they are getting screwed out of jobs and marginalized by society for being straight white males. They are totally oblivious to their own white privilege and all of the opportunities they have been given just because they are straight white males. Ignoring all of the hardship that people who aren’t straight white males have had to deal with.

It is that straight white privilege that has helped create this idea of a Straight White Pride… geez! Why do I keep putting “white” in there? Well, there is a reason…

One of the organizers, Mark Sahady, also has ties to the New Hampshire American Guard and the Massachusetts Patriot Front, both of which are defined as “white supremacist groups” by the American Defamation League. John Hugo, another one of the organizers, has connections to what is considered an an “alt-lite” group called Resist Marxism.

Sidebar FYI: Alt-lite, also known as the “alt-light” and the “new right”, is a loosely-defined right-wing political movement whose members regard themselves as separate from both mainstream conservatism and the far-right, white nationalist perspective characteristic of the alt-right. Now you know.

There may actually be people who are naive enough to think that this parade is to celebrate the good that straight people have done. But I suspect this is more about spreading the Straight White ideals, inspired by the dick-hole of an American President, Donald Trump. If you have seen any footage from any of his rallies, they are just a platform for him to spout his racist, sexist, anti-immigrant, straight, white agenda.

What many people, including myself, don’t realize is that Gay Pride Parades aren’t just something fun, or to celebrate the LGTBQ community. It started as a protest.

The original parade was a protest, held in June 1970 to mark the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall riots. The riots came from a clash between police and patrons of the Stonewall Inn after a series of raids on the West Village gay bar in New York City. Back then, it was illegal to be LGBTQ in most states across the US. Being gay or transgender was treated as a crime. Gay bars were akin to the speakeasy during Prohibition. Any that were targeted by cops had their patrons beaten and arrested. One year after the Stonewall riots, activists in New York City remembered the the events by marching from the West Village to Central Park, where they gathered for what organizers termed a “gay-in.” It was a space where LGBTQ people could be themselves without police inference.

Now, think about that. Imagine having to hide away from society simply for being true to yourself. Imagine that, if discovered for just being, you could be arrested, even beaten. Now imagine how liberating it would be to be able to live the life you want without fear, having the same rights and freedoms as everyone else.

Straight white people already have that.

LGBTQ people don’t.

Their pride parades allow them to celebrate the freedoms they have and remind others of the freedoms and equality they have yet to gain. Some dress up in flamboyant costumes, while others just show their pride a la a rainbow flag. But behind it all is a continued importance that there is much that has to be done until they gain equality.

A Straight Pride parade is to celebrate… what exactly? That straight people matter? That they deserve equalit-hahahahahaha!

That’s fuckin’ bullshit.

I know it.

Most people with any common sense and the ability to detect irony know it.

The guys behind it should just call it what it is. It is a Straight White Pride parade. They should fly their Confederate flags and swastikas with pride, and make sure to not hide their faces behind some white hoods. After all, they should be proud of their straightness and whiteness.
